4-4: Adaptation
Adaptation to environment
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| acidity | It’s measured by pH, and things like lemon juice or vinegar are acidic. In biology, acidity can affect how plants grow or how animals survive in water. |
| geographic barriers | Natural features like mountains, rivers, or oceans that separate groups of organisms and can prevent them from mating with each other. This can lead to the formation of new species over time. |
| gene frequency | How often a certain version of a gene appears in a population. It can change over time due to things like natural selection or mutations. |
| adaptation | A trait that helps an organism survive and reproduce in its environment. Adaptations can be physical (like thick fur) or behavioral (like birds flying south for the winter). |
