Evolution of Populations

TermDefinition
advantageous heritable trait A helpful characteristic that an organism is born with and can pass on to its offspring. This trait gives the organism a better chance to survive and reproduce in its environment.
Variation the differences between individuals in a group. These differences can be in looks, behavior, or how their bodies work.
disease something that makes the body not work properly. It can be caused by germs, genetics, or other problems in the body.
infection when harmful germs like bacteria or viruses get into the body and start to grow, often making you feel sick.
microevolution change in the frequency of a trait for a population
gene pool all of the inheritable variations for a trait in a population
genetic drift chance events that can cause a traits frequency to fluctuate unpredictably from one generation to the next
gene flow when individual or their gamete (such as plant pollen) move into or out of a population (migration), the frequency of traits can change randomly
gene frequencies how often a specific allele or version of a gene occurs in a population
