| soil horizon | a layer parallel to the soil surface, whose physical characteristics differ from the layers above and beneath. |
| permeability | a description of how well a rock or sediments allows water to flow through. |
| porosity | the measure of the amount of empty space in a rock or sediment. |
| humus | material in the soil that formed from decayed plants and animals |
| silt | fine particles of fertilized soil: size is between sand and clay |
| loam | rich fertile soil that is made up of about equal parts clay, sand, and silt |
| clay | sediment that is comprised of very fine mineral particlesand not much organic material: The finest soil. |
