What is the purpose of the digestive system? To absorb + digest nutrients
what are the 4 types of teeth? Incisors, Canine, Pre-Molars, Molars
What do the incisors do? Cut/bite
What do the Canines do? Tear
What do Pre-Molars + molars do? Crush/grind
What does the tongue do? Moves food to teeth, controls taste + speech
Where is saliva produced? Salivary Glands
What does saliva do? Chemical digestion
Blocks nasal cavity when swallowing What does the uvula do?
Leads from the mouth to the esophagus What does the pharynx do?
Blocks airway when swallowing What does the epiglottis do?
What 2 structures are activated when swallowing to ensure food goes down the right way? Uvula + Epiglottis
What does the larynx do? Allows for speech
Muscular tube that carries food to the stomach Esophagus
Breaks down food with acid Stomach
Folds in the stomach that allow it to expand Rugae
Beginning of the small intestine, breaks down fats Duodenum
Middle + end of small intestine, absorbs nutrients Jejunum + Ileum
Produces bile Liver
Stores bile Gallbladder
Makes insulin Pancreas
Absorbs water after nutrients have been absorbed Large intestine
Send signals to your brain Sphincters
Carries bile from the liver to the gallbladder Common bile duct
What are the 3 parts of the large intestine? Ascending colon, Transverse colon, Descending colon
