Mitosis

QuestionAnswer
1. What happens during interphase? The cell grows, performs normal functions, and replicates its DNA.
2. What are the two parts of interphase? • Growth phases (G1 and G2) • DNA synthesis phase (S phase)
3. What is the purpose of mitosis? To produce two identical daughter cells for growth, repair, or replacement.
4. What happens during prophase? Chromatin condenses into chromosomes, and the nuclear membrane dissolves.
What happens during metaphase? Chromosomes line up in the middle of the cell.
What happens during anaphase? Sister chromatids are pulled apart to opposite ends of the cell.
What happens during telophase? New nuclear membranes form around each set of chromosomes. New nuclear membranes form around each set of chromosomes.
What is cytokinesis? The division of the cytoplasm to form two separate daughter cells.
What is apoptosis? Programmed cell death, a natural process to remove damaged or unnecessary cells.
What are cancer cells? Cells that divide uncontrollably and ignore normal cell checkpoints.
What is a tumor? A mass of abnormal cells that result from uncontrolled cell division.
