| Term | Definition |

| Axon: | portion of a nerve cell (neuron) that carries nerve impulses away from the cell body |
| Brain: | an essential organ that controls many body functions; receives and interprets all the sensory information a person encounters, like sights, sounds, smells, and tastes; many complex parts that work together to help a person function |
| Cell body: | the central part of a nerve cell that contains the nucleus |
| Dendrites: | projections of a neuron that receive signals from other neurons |
| Frontal lobe: | in the front part of the brain right behind the forehead; largest lobe and controls thinking, short term memory, behavior, and movement |
| Mental flexibility: | the ability to change one’s course of action or thought in response to a situation’s changing demands |
| Neurons: | cells in your brain and nerves that can send and relay signals to other neurons |
| Occipital lobe: | lobe in the back of the brain; allows you to process visual information; controls how a person interprets shapes, colors, and movement |
| Parietal lobe: | lobe near the center of the brain; manages language and touch. |
| Executive function: | the mental process that enables us to plan, focus attention, remember, and juggle multiple tasks |
| Self-control: | the ability to control oneself, in particular one’s emotions and desires or the expression of them in one’s behavior, especially in difficult situations |
| Synapses: | the place where neurons connect and communicate with each other; each neuron has hundreds to thousands of synaptic connections |
| Temporal lobe: | is a pair of areas on your brain’s left and right sides, inside your skull near your temples, manages hearing, learning, and feelings |
