Flash cards for the upcoming atmosphere test.

QuestionAnswer
What is the atmosphere and why is it important? The atmosphere is all of the air on Earth. It's important because it protects us from harmful UV rays and gives us the oxygen we need to breathe.
How is the atmosphere connected to the other spheres? Water vapor gets into the atmosphere: Hydrosphere Life needs oxygen to live: Biosphere Wind erodes rocks: Geosphere
Place the layers in order from bottom to top? Troposphere Stratosphere Mesosphere Thermosphere Exosphere
3 Most abundant gases - most to least abundant? Nitrogen Oxygen Argon.
Ozone layer and its importance? The ozone layer is a layer in the stratosphere which contains ozone (3 oxygen) The ozone layer protects us from harmful UV rays from the sun.
Ionosphere and its importance? The ionosphere is a layer going from the mesosphere to the exosphere full of charged particles. It reflects radio waves.
As altitude increases in the troposphere, temp does what? Decreases.
Layers are classified by what? Temperature.
As altitude decreases, air pressure does what? Increases
As altitude increases, molecules do become more what? Spread out.
Water vapor is the only state of matter found in the atmosphere - TRUE OR FALSE? False.
What is the name of the gas composed of 3 oxygen atoms? Ozone.
For clouds to form the rising cool must cool its ___ _____ for water to condense and form clouds. - fill in the blank. Dew point.
Humidity is the amount of _____ _____ in the air - fill in the blank. Water vapor.
Clouds are classified by what? Shape and altitude.
Clouds at higher altitudes are made of what? Ice crystals.
The kind of precipitation depends on what? Air temp.
What is the greenhouse effect and its importance. The greenhouse effect is when air in the atmosphere traps in heat. This keeps Earth hot enough to have life.
What is global warming? Why is it important? Global warming is the Earth rapidly heating up from an abundance of dangerous greenhouse gases.
What is climate change? Everything from the good, the bad, and the ugly. Climate change is the slow change of the weather and temperature patterns. Climate change is good when it's slow, but global warming has made it change rapidly., this can cause deaths, loss of homes, and destruction.
What is global warming potential? How much heat a gas can hold in. The lower the better. Compared to carbon dioxide.
Sort the gases. See the next 2 questions below.
Good gases: Oxygen, Water vapor, Argon, Nitrogen.
Bad gases: Carbon Dioxide, Chlorofluorocarbon, Nitrous Oxide, Methane.
What is the AQI. The AQI means the air quality index. It shows how good or bad the air quality is. It is determined on a scale of 0-500, 0-50 being good, 300-500 being hazardous.
