1-7: Respiration
cellular respiration transfers food energy to ATP.
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Aerobic cellular respiration | The process by which cells use oxygen and breakdown sugar molecules to form ATP, which they use to perform their functions. |
| anaerobic respiration | A way cells make energy without using oxygen. It happens in some bacteria and during hard exercise when your muscles run low on oxygen. |
| glycolysis | The first step in breaking down sugar (glucose) to release energy. It happens in the cytoplasm of the cell and does not need oxygen. |
| fermentation | A process cells use to make energy when there is no oxygen. It produces small amounts of energy and can create substances like lactic acid or alcohol. |
