How do we view cells? A light microscope
What do scientists use to view objects that can’t be seen using a light microscope? Electron microscope
Eyepiece Look through, magnifies object (usually x10)
Objective Lens Increases magnification (usually x4, x10, x40)

Coarse focus wheel Focuses image, moves stage up and down
Fine focus wheel Focuses image
Light Illuminates object
To calculate the total magnification Magnification of the eyepiece x Magnification of objective lens
Cell membrane - structure Bilayer of phospholipids with embedded proteins. Fluid structure. Constantly moving. Phosphate head - hydrophilic. Lipid tails - hydrophobic.
Cell membrane- function Controls what enters and leaves cell. Semi-permeable. Water moves by osmosis. Oxygen moves by diffusion. Large molecules moved across by active transport.
