1-2: Hierarchy
Interacting systems provide specific functions within multicellular organisms.
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| cells | The basic building blocks of all living things. They are the smallest units that can carry out life functions. |
| molecule | A group of atoms bonded together that make up everything around us and the substances in our bodies. |
| interacting systems | Different parts of the body that work together to keep us alive and healthy, like the digestion and circulatory. |
| multicellular organisms | Living things made up of many cells, like humans, animals, and plants. |
| nutrient uptake | The process of absorbing nutrients from food, which our bodies use for energy, growth, and repair. |
| water delivery | The process of moving water throughout the body to keep cells hydrated and help with various functions. |
| immune response | The body's defense mechanism against harmful invaders like bacteria and viruses, involving cells and proteins that fight off infections. |
| response to stimuli | How living things react to changes in their environment, like moving away from danger or adjusting to temperature changes. |
| hierarchical structural organization | The way living things are organized from simple to complex levels, starting with cells, then tissues, organs, and systems. |
| disease | A condition that disrupts normal body functions, often caused by infections, genetic issues, or environmental factors. |
| homeostasis | The process by which the body maintains a stable internal environment, like keeping body temperature and pH levels balanced. |
| vaccinations | Shots that help protect against diseases by training the immune system to recognize and fight specific germs. |
| antibiotics | Medicines that kill or stop the growth of bacteria, helping to treat bacterial infections. |
| prevention | Actions taken to avoid getting sick, like washing hands, eating healthy, and getting vaccinated. |
| treatment | Medical care given to help cure or manage a disease or injury, like taking medicine or undergoing surgery. |
