DNA (Biology Unit)

TermDefinition
DNA Deoxyrubonucleic Acid- A molecule found in the nucleuse (This molecule is a "code" that determines everything about a cell
The Genetic code It comes from a very long chain of nitrogen base pairs
The 4 Nitrogen bases Adenine Thymine Guanine and Cytosine
The pairs of nitrogen bases Adenine only pairs with Thymine Guanine only pairs with Cytosine
What is DNA made of? Phosphate molecules Sugar molecules and a Nitrogen pairs (which also forms a nucleotide)
What forms a gene? The segment of nitrogen base pairs form a gene
what do genes do? Genes provides instructions for how to build proteins control the structure and functions of cells
Protein Production Each protein is programmed to do specific things (Build parts of the body, transfers signals etc)
Genetic Screening Some serious disorders are controlled by the genetic code Doctors use Genetic Screening to examine DNA and identify these disorders
Transgenic Organism All organism have the same 4 nitrogen bases so the genetic code from a organism can be read by another, Doctor's can transfer genes from one organism to another to promote protein production
what can transffering organism produce It produces GMO ( Genetically Modified Organism or transgenic organism)
Mutation Sometimes the Nitrogen base pair (A,T,C and G) sequence can change (Mutate) due to mutagen like radiation or chemicals
non-normal protein When nucleotide sequence changes, the protein created also changes resulting into mutation

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
