Digestive System Overview

QuestionAnswer
What is the primary function of the digestive system? To break down food, absorb nutrients, and eliminate waste.
What are the main organs of the digestive system? Mouth, pharynx, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, rectum, anus.
What are the accessory organs of the digestive system? Salivary glands, liver, gallbladder, and pancreas.
What is the function of the mouth in digestion? Mechanical digestion (chewing) and chemical digestion (enzymes like amylase start breaking down carbohydrates).
What is the function of the esophagus? To transport food from the mouth to the stomach via peristalsis.
What role does the stomach play in digestion? It churns food and uses gastric acid and enzymes to begin protein digestion.
What is the primary site of nutrient absorption? The small intestine.
What is the main function of the large intestine? Absorb water and electrolytes and form feces.
What is the function of the liver in digestion? Produces bile to help digest fats.
What is the function of the pancreas in digestion? Secretes digestive enzymes and bicarbonate into the small intestine to aid in digestion.
