| Amniotic Sac | the fluid-filled sac that contains and protects a fetus in the womb |
| Analgesia | Relieves pain without loss of feeling or muscle movement; used to lessen the pain, but does not stop pain completely |
| Anesthesia | Relieves pain by blocking most feeling, including pain |
| Anesthesiologists | a person who specializes in preoperative care, developing anesthetic plans, and the administration of anesthetics |
| Braxton-Hicks Contractions | mild, irregular contractions during pregnancy |
| Breech Birth | when a baby is positioned feet or bottom first in the uterus |
| Certified Nurse Midwife | someone who focuses on preconception, pregnancy, childbirth, postpartum, and newborn care |
| Cesarean Section | the surgical delivery of a baby through a cut (incision) made in the mother's abdomen and uterus |

| Obstetrician-Gynecologists | a doctor who specializes in pregnancy, childbirth, and a woman’s reproductive system |
| Premature Labor | labor occurring between 20 and 37 weeks of gestation |
| Standard Hospital Delivery | giving birth at a hospital; labor and delivery room and recovery room; pain medications available; induction possible |
| Transition | the last part of active labor; can be painful and intense; contractions close together and last 60 to 90 seconds |
| Transverse | when a baby is sideways in utero, lying horizontal across the uterus, rather than vertical (head up or down) |
