TermDefinition
Antiques original furniture that is at least 100 years old.
Case good: furniture piece where wood is the primary material used in construction.
Case work: built-ins or a piece of furniture attached to the wall.
Classical style: copies of historical styles.
Collectable: highly valued furnishing less than 100 years old, but no longer made.
Country style a style of furniture that traces its origin from rural area lifestyles
Eclectic style furniture pieces used from different periods that are combined to create an interesting effect.
Moti repeated elements in an ornamental design
Period a measure of historical duration.
Period style: indicates the historical period in which the design was famous.
Provincial style a simplified version of a traditional style.
Reproductions and adaptations designs based on other periods and often using a mix of designs.
Style refers to the use of design characteristics that identify the work of a famous designer, school of designers, or rulers who commissioned cabinetmakers to produce certain designs.
Traditional style: formal, classic look that includes furniture styles from historic Europe.
Transitional-contemporary style: combines more formal styles with the straight lines of contemporary or modern styles or through contemporary fabrics, colors, and accessories.
Accent chair also know as a “side chair” is added to spaces to provide additional seating and to add visual interest to a room.
Aesthetics the qualities that give pleasure to the eye.
Armoire a wardrobe or moveable cabinet, typically ornate or antique.
Bookcase furniture that consists of shelves to hold books.
Chaise a long low chair for reclining, with a back and single armrest to one side.

Loveseat a small sofa designed for two people.
Multipurpose furniture : furniture that serves more than one purpose.
Quality furniture constructing furniture using the appropriate materials to withstand the wear and tear.
Ottoman: a low upholstered seat, or footstool, without a back or arms that typically serves also as a box, with the seat hinged to form a lid.
Patina: a surface appearance that grows beautiful with age.

Restore to return a piece of furniture to its original state as much as possible.
Sectional: a sofa made in sections that can be used separately or as chairs or together as a larger sofa that may have angles.
Sideboard is a long cabinet with floor length cabinets and may have box-like hutches for displaying dishes or decorative items.
Sofa a long, upholstered seat with a back and arms, for three or more people
Unassembled furniture: furniture sold in parts which require assembly.
Embossing a technique where a raised pattern is pressed into the surface of a material.
Fibers tiny hair-like structures that are the building blocks of all textiles.
Hand: the way fabric feels to the touch.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs): chemicals found in products used in interior environments which are released or “off-gas” into the air.
