| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| cohesion | attraction between like molecules |
| adhesion | attraction between unlike molecules |
| solution | when one substance dissolves in another |
| solute | the substance that is getting dissolved i.e. salt, sugar |
| solvent | the liquid the substance is getting dissolved into i.e. water |
| suspension | mixture of water and nondissolved materials |
| pH | scale that measures acids and bases |
| acid | pH levels that are below 7 |
| base | pH levels that are above 7 |
| buffer | help keep acids and baes at the correct level i.e. Tums |
| carbohydrate | the main source of energy for living things; sugar and starches |
| monosaccharide | one sugar; glucose and fructose |
| polysaccharide | many sugars; the most complex that give the most energy; made up of chains of sugars i.e. starches (bread, grain, pasta) |
| glycogen | a polysaccharide also called a starch - how plans and animals store excess sugar |
| starch | a complex form in which some plants make food |
| lipid | important parts of biological membranes |
| nucleic acid | RNA or DNA |
| nucleotide | monomer of nucleic acids made up of a 5-carbon sugar; a phosphate group and a nitrogenous base |
| protein | help carry out chemical reactons; transport substances in and out of cells; composed of amino acids; polymers of amino acids |
| amino acid | monomer of protein |
| chemical reaction | process that changes one set of chemical into another |
| activation energy | energy needed to get a reaction started |
| enzyme | protein that acts as a biological catalyst |
| substate | reactant of an enzyme-catalyzed reaction |
