element A substance that can't be broken down into simpler chemical substances.
Atom Smallest particle of an element that has the characteristics of that element
Nucleus The center of an atom
isotopes Atoms of the same element that have different numbers or neutrons.
Compound A substance that is composed of atoms of two or more different elements that are chemically combined.
covalent bonds the force that holds two atoms together.
molecule a group of atoms held together by covalent bonds and having no overall charge.
ion A charged particle
Metabolism All of the Chemical Reactions that occur within a orgaism
Mixture a combination of substances n which the individual compounds retain their own properties
solution a mixture in which one or more substances are distributed evenly in another substsnce
acid any substance thast forms hydroxide ions in water
Base
Polar molecule a molecule with an un equal distributon of charge.
Hydroen bond The attraction of opposite charges between hydrogen and oxygen forms a weak bond
Diffusion The net movement of pairings from am area ofhiger concentration to an area of lower concetration.
Polymer A large molecule formed when many smaller molecules bond together to the structer of carbohydrates.
Carbohydrate An organtic compound composed of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen with a raito of 2 hydrogen and 1 oxygen atom for every carbon atom
