Diversity of Prokaryotic Microorganisms
| Class | Genera | Features |
|---|---|---|
| Alpha Probacteria | Rickettsia | Gram negative, obligate intracellular, usually pathogenic, insect vectors like ticks |
| Beta Probacteria | Thiobacillus | sulfur oxidizing, can use hydrogen & sulfur as electron donors and produce sulfate as waste |
| Gamma Probacteria | Francisellales/Pseudomonas | obgligate anarobes, common in soil & water for breakdown of waste |
| Gamma Probacteria | Enteric Bacteria | common in intestines of humans & animals, E. Coli is in this group as is samonella |
| Delta Probacteria | Desulfovibrio | Sulfate reducers, anaerobe |
| Epsilonproteobacteria | Helicobacter | Stomach ulcers, withstand high acid environment |
| Non-Probacteria Gram Negatives | Cyanobacteriales | photosynthetic anarobes |
| Nonprobacteria Gram Positives | Clostridia | can produce botulinum toxin, tetnus |
| Gram Positives | Mycoplasms | lack cell wall and have variable shapes |
| Gram Positives | Bacillus | endospore forming rods found in soil, anthrax |
| Low G&C Gram Positive | Staphyloccus | grape-like clusters of cocci, respond positive catalase test, halophiles, toxic shock syndrome |
| High G&C Gram Positive | Mycobacterium | acid-fast cell wall, tuberculosis, leprosy |
| Chlamydiae | Chlamydia | no peptoglydican, gram neg., requires mamilian cell, body attaches, enters forming vacuole |
| Spirochaetes | Treponema | Syphilis |
