Cell Vocabulary

QuestionAnswer
cells one of the tiny units that are the basic building blocks of living things, that carry on the basic functions of life either alone or in groups, and that include a nucleus and are surrounded by a membrane
organisms an individual living thing that carries on the activities of life by means of organs which have separate functions but are dependent on each other : a living person, plant, or animal
plasma membrane outside layer surrounding the contents of a cell; allows entrance and exist; also known as a cell membrane
cytoplasm the protoplasm of a plant or animal cell except for the nucleus
cell wall the firm nonliving layer that encloses and supports the cells of most plants, bacteria, fungi, and algae
organelles a structure (as a mitochondrion) in a cell that performs a special function
eukaryote (eukaryotic cells) an organism composed of one or more cells with clearly viewable nuclei
protoplasm a mixture of various organic and inorganic substances (as proteins and water) that makes up the living nucleus, cytoplasm, plastids, and mitochondria of the cell and is considered the physical basis of life
nucleus a cell part that is characteristic of all living things with the exception of viruses, bacteria, and blue-green algae, that is necessary for heredity and for making proteins, that contains the chromosomes, and that is enclosed in a nuclear membrane
prokaryote (prokaryotic cells) an organism (as a bacterium) that is typically single-celled and does not have a nucleus
mitochondrion one of the round or long bodies found in the cytoplasm of cells outside the nucleus that are rich in fats, proteins, and enzymes and are important centers of metabolic processes which use oxygen and produce energy
