CKEB Lesson 2
Cell Vocabulary
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| cells | one of the tiny units that are the basic building blocks of living things, that carry on the basic functions of life either alone or in groups, and that include a nucleus and are surrounded by a membrane |
| organisms | an individual living thing that carries on the activities of life by means of organs which have separate functions but are dependent on each other : a living person, plant, or animal |
| plasma membrane | outside layer surrounding the contents of a cell; allows entrance and exist; also known as a cell membrane |
| cytoplasm | the protoplasm of a plant or animal cell except for the nucleus |
| cell wall | the firm nonliving layer that encloses and supports the cells of most plants, bacteria, fungi, and algae |
| organelles | a structure (as a mitochondrion) in a cell that performs a special function |
| eukaryote (eukaryotic cells) | an organism composed of one or more cells with clearly viewable nuclei |
| protoplasm | a mixture of various organic and inorganic substances (as proteins and water) that makes up the living nucleus, cytoplasm, plastids, and mitochondria of the cell and is considered the physical basis of life |
| nucleus | a cell part that is characteristic of all living things with the exception of viruses, bacteria, and blue-green algae, that is necessary for heredity and for making proteins, that contains the chromosomes, and that is enclosed in a nuclear membrane |
| prokaryote (prokaryotic cells) | an organism (as a bacterium) that is typically single-celled and does not have a nucleus |
| mitochondrion | one of the round or long bodies found in the cytoplasm of cells outside the nucleus that are rich in fats, proteins, and enzymes and are important centers of metabolic processes which use oxygen and produce energy |
