Digestive System a series of organs that work together to break down food into nutrients that can be absorbed and used by the bod
Mechanical Digestion the physical process of breaking food into smaller pieces. It begins in the mouth with chewing and continues in the stomach and intestines
Chemical Digestion the process where food is broken down into smaller molecules by enzymes, allowing the body to absorb nutrients from the food through the bloodstream
Mouth the opening in an organism's body through which food enters, essentially the first part of the digestive system, usually bordered by lips and containing teeth and tongue
Saliva The clear, watery fluid in the mouth made by the salivary glands. that moistens food to help with chewing and swallowing
Pharynx a hollow, muscular tube inside the neck that starts behind the nose and opens into the larynx and esophagus
Epiglottis a flap of cartilage that covers the windpipe when you swallow, preventing food and drink from entering your lungs
Esophogus The muscular tube through which food passes from the throat to the stomach
Stomach muscular, hollow organ in the digestive system that breaks down food
Small Intestine a long, tube-like organ in the digestive system that primarily absorbs nutrients from food, connecting the stomach to the large intestine and where most digestion takes place
Large Intestine a tube-shaped organ in the lower abdomen that absorbs water and electrolytes from food waste, and eliminates waste from the body
