Cells & Organelles

TermDefinition
Nucleus The control center of the cell and contains all of your genetic information
Cytoplasm The jelly-like substance inside a cell.
Vacuoles The storage bubbles found in cells. They are much larger in plant cells. The large vacuole in a plant cell fills with water which exerts a force on the cell wall and ensures the structure of the cell.
Cell Membrane A boundary that surrounds the cytoplasm of a cell. It allows certain substances into and out of the cell.
Cell Wall A rigid outer boundary that provides structure for plant cells.
Mitochondria The cell’s POWERHOUSE. They release energy in food by carrying out a reaction with oxygen. Cells that need more energy, like muscle cells, have a larger number of mitochondria.
Chloroplast The food production structures that contain chlorophyll, a green pigment that makes plants look green, and also uses energy from the sun to change water and carbon dioxide into glucose.
