Cells & Organelles
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Nucleus | The control center of the cell and contains all of your genetic information |
| Cytoplasm | The jelly-like substance inside a cell. |
| Vacuoles | The storage bubbles found in cells. They are much larger in plant cells. The large vacuole in a plant cell fills with water which exerts a force on the cell wall and ensures the structure of the cell. |
| Cell Membrane | A boundary that surrounds the cytoplasm of a cell. It allows certain substances into and out of the cell. |
| Cell Wall | A rigid outer boundary that provides structure for plant cells. |
| Mitochondria | The cell’s POWERHOUSE. They release energy in food by carrying out a reaction with oxygen. Cells that need more energy, like muscle cells, have a larger number of mitochondria. |
| Chloroplast | The food production structures that contain chlorophyll, a green pigment that makes plants look green, and also uses energy from the sun to change water and carbon dioxide into glucose. |
