Chapter 4 Lesson 4

TermDefinition
Chordate An animal that has a notochord, a nerve cord, and throat pouches at some point in its life.
Notochord A flexible cord that supports a chordate's back just below the nerve cord.
Vertebra The bones that make up the backbone of an organism. In humans one of the 26 bones that make up the backbone.
Ectotherm An animal whose body temperature is determined by the temperature of its environment.
Endotherm An animal whose body temperature is regulated by the internal heat the animal produces.
What are the three characteristics of chordates? A notochord, a nerve cord, and throat pouches at some point in its life.
What is the difference between and ectotherm and an endotherm? An endotherm's body temperature is regulated by the internal heat it produces, while an ectotherm's body temperature is determined by the temperature of its environment.
