allele – one of a number of different forms of a gene heterozygous – term used to refer to an organism that has two different alleles for the same trait prophase – first and longest phase of mitosis, during which the chromosomes become visible and the centrioles separate and take up positions on the opposite sides of the nucleus
codominance – situation in which both alleles of a gene contribute to the phenotype of the organism homozygous – term used to refer to an organism that has two indentical alleles for a particular trait recessive – the weaker allele; always masked by the dominant allele
dihybrid cross – a genetic cross between two sets of contrasting traits incomplete dominance – situation in which one allele is not completely dominant over another
dominant – the term used to describe the stronger allele; allele always shown when present monohybrid cross – a genetic cross between one set of contrasting traits
genetics – the study of genes and traits phenotype – physical characteristics of an organism
genotype – genetic makeup of an organism probability – likelihood that a particular event will occur
