Arch | a curved member that is used to span an opening and to support loads from above. |
Bracket: | a structural or decorative member made of wood, stone, plaster, or metal that projects from a wall in order to carry weight or strengthen an angle. |
Cantilevered | a structural element anchored at only one end to a vertical support from which it protrudes. |
Chimney | a structure designed to carry off smoke from a fireplace or furnace. |
Column | a vertical element which in most cases serves as a support but may also be decorative. |
Corbel | a type of structural bracket jutting from a wall to carry weight. |
Cupola | a relatively small, often dome-like, tall structure on top of a building used to provide a lookout or admit light and air. |
Dental molding: | a type of wooden molding with blocks shaped like teeth. |
Dormer | a vertical window that projects from a sloping roof and usually illuminates a room. |
Eaves | the edges of the roof which overhang the face of a wall. |
Façade | French word that means “frontage” or “face”. In architecture, the facade of a building is often the most important aspect from a design standpoint, as it sets the tone for the rest of the building. |
Fanlight | a semi-circular or semi-elliptical window with glazing bars radiating out like a fan often placed over windows or doors. |
Finial | a decorative element marking the top or end of some object or structure. |
Frieze | a decorative horizontal band, usually, but not always, above a doorframe or on the wall near the ceiling. |
Gable roof | a roof with slopes on two sides that connect to the specialized walls known as gables. |
Gambrel roof | a two-sided roof with two slopes on either side. |
Hip roof: | a type of roof where all sides slope downwards to the walls. |
Masonry | laying individual masonry units (brick, concrete block, stone, etc.) with cement mortar, which binds them together to create a structure. |
Molding | an embellishment in strip form, made of wood or other structural material, that is used to decorate or finish a surface, such as the wall of a room or building or the surface of a door or piece of furniture. |
Neoclassical | concentration on Greek and roman architectural and design elements. |
Ornamentation | a decoration used to embellish parts of a building or object. |
Palladian Window: | : large windows divided into three parts with a larger arched center section flanked by two flat-topped sections. |
Pediment | triangular gable forming the end of the roof slope over a portico, or a similar form used decoratively over a doorway or window. |
Pilaster | a rectangular support that resembles a flat column with only ornamental function. |
Pillar | any isolated, vertical structural member such as a pier, column, or post. |
Porch | a roofed structure, usually open at the sides, projecting from the face of a building and used to protect the entrance. |
Portico | a type of porch leading to the entrance of a building, or extended as a colonnade, with a roof structure over a walkway, supported by evenly spaced columns. |
Roof | protective cover for the top of buildings to protect structure from the elements. |
Shed roof: | a single-sloped roof surface, often not attached to another roof surface. |
Stucco | a type of plaster that is used for covering ceilings and the outside walls of buildings. |
Tower | a tall, usually square or circular structure, sometimes part of a larger building and usually built for a specific purpose. |
Turret | a small tower that projects vertically from the wall or corner of a building. |
Transom light: | a small window placed above a door or window. |
