Matter in Biosphere
7th Grade Unit 21
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Biosphere | the part of the Earth where life exists, including all living organisms and their environments, essentially the "zone of life" on our planet |
| Organisms | any living thing, like a plant, animal, bacteria, or fungus, that can function on its own; essentially, a single individual life form |
| Ecosystem | a community of living organisms (like plants and animals) interacting with their non-living environment (like water, soil, and sunlight) within a specific area, where everything depends on each other to survive |
| Biotic | living, or relating to living things |
| Abiotic | not living or made up of living things |
| Nutrients | chemical compounds found in food that help the body grow, function, and maintain health |
| Producer | an organism that can create its own food, typically using sunlight through photosynthesis, essentially forming the base of a food chain |
| Consumer | an organism that cannot produce its own food and must eat other organisms (plants or animals) to obtain energy |
| Decomposers | any organism that breaks down or eats decaying material for its energy source |
| Food Web | a visual representation of how different organisms in an ecosystem eat each other |
| Herbivore | an animal that only eats plants |
| Carnivore | an organism that eats mostly meat, or the flesh of other animals |
| Sustained | the practice of using natural resources in a way that allows them to remain healthy, diverse, and productive over time |
| Matter | anything that takes up space and has mass, essentially referring to the physical "stuff" that makes up living organisms and their environment |
| Nitrogen Cycle | a natural process where nitrogen moves through the environment, from the air to the soil, into living organisms, and back into the air again, primarily through the actions of bacteria that convert nitrogen into usable forms for plants and animals |
| Carbon Cycle | the continuous movement of carbon atoms between the Earth's atmosphere, oceans, plants, and animals, |
| Respiration | the process of exchanging oxygen and carbon dioxide in the body |
| Fossil Fuels | non-renewable energy sources that come from the remains of prehistoric plants and animals |
| Combustion | the process of burning, where a substance rapidly reacts with oxygen, releasing heat and usually light as a result; |
