Root Part of plant that anchors plant to the ground, stores nutrients, and absorbs water
Stem Part of plant that transports nutrients from roots to leaves
Leaf Part of plant where photosynthesis primarily takes place

Stamen In flowers, the male reproductive system
Pistil In flowers, the female reproductive system
Seed Baby plant
Meristem Regions of unspecialized cells responsible for continuing growth throughout a plant’s lifetime
Phloem Vascular tissue that transports solutions of nutrients and carbohydrates produced by photosynthesis through the plant
Xylem Vascular tissue that carries water upward from the roots to every part of a plant
Guard cells Specialized cell in the epidermis of plants that controls the opening and closing of stomata
Transpiration Loss of water from a plant through its leaves
Photosynthesis Process used by plants and other autotrophs to capture light energy and use it to power chemical reactions that convert carbon dioxide and water into oxygen and energy-rich carbohydrates such as sugars and starches
Cellular respiration Process that releases energy from food in the presence of oxygen
Fermentation Process by which cells release energy in the absence of oxygen
Biogeochemical cycle Process in which elements, chemical compounds, and other forms of matter are passed from one organism to another and from one part of the biosphere to another
