| Meristem | Regions of unspecialized cells responsible for continuing growth throughout a plant’s lifetime |
| Phloem | Vascular tissue that transports solutions of nutrients and carbohydrates produced by photosynthesis through the plant |
| Xylem | Vascular tissue that carries water upward from the roots to every part of a plant |
| Guard cells | Specialized cell in the epidermis of plants that controls the opening and closing of stomata |
| Transpiration | Loss of water from a plant through its leaves |
| Photosynthesis | Process used by plants and other autotrophs to capture light energy and use it to power chemical reactions that convert carbon dioxide and water into oxygen and energy-rich carbohydrates such as sugars and starches |
| Cellular respiration | Process that releases energy from food in the presence of oxygen |
| Fermentation | Process by which cells release energy in the absence of oxygen |
