| Genotype | genetic makeup of an organism (what two alleles are present) |
| Phenotype | An organism's physical or physiological traits |
| Dominant | Shown with upper case letters and is the trait that is fully expressed |
| Recessive | Shown with lower case letters and is the trait that isn't likely to be expressed unless it is not paired with a dominant allele (pp) |
| Homozygous | Two similar genotypes, either two upper case letters or two lower case letters. (PP or pp) |
| Heterozygous | Two different genotypes, it is one upper case letter and one lower case letter (Pp) |
| Gene locus | a specific location of various alleles on a chromosome |
| Gene (Mendel's definition) | A discrete unit of hereditary information controlling a character |
| Gene (Modern definition) | A segment of DNA that codes for a character |
| Allele | Alternate versions of a gene |
| Trait | Each variant of a character (can either have green eye trait of blue eye trait, but not both) |
| Character | Heritable features (Eye color, hair color, flower color) |
