Eli's Cycles
Water Cycle, Oxygen Cycle, Carbon Cycle, and Nitrogen Cycle.
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Law of Conservation of Energy | States that energy cannot be created nor destroyed, only change forms. |
| Law of Conservation of Mass | States that the total amount of mass cannot be created nor destroyed. |
| Evaporation | When heat is added to water (liquid), and it is converted into water vapor (gas). |
| Condensation | When heat is removed from water vapor (gas), and it is converted into water droplets (liquid). |
| Precipitation | When clouds get too heavy with water, and it falls as rain, snow, sleet, or hail. |
| Run off | Precipitation that runs off the land into a river, or an ocean. |
| Groundwater | Water from precipitation that is absorbed into the soil. |
| Transpiration | Water that turns into water vapor from a plant's leaves. |
| Producer | An organism that can produce it's own food by photosynthesis. |
| Consumer | An organism that can't produce food, and gets it from eating producers, or other consumers. |
| Organism | Any living being. |
| Biotic | A living organism that contributes to an ecosystem. (Plants, animals, decomposers.) |
| Abiotic | A non-living organism that also contributes to an ecosystem. (Some soil, atmosphere, air, temperature.) |
| Biosphere | A group of biotic, and abiotic factors in a certain area. |
| Deforestation | The process of cutting down multiple trees in one area. |
| Fossil Fuels | Fuels from the Earth created by dead plants and animals that take millions of years to form. |
| Nitrogen Fixation | When free nitrogen is converted into nitrogen compounds, a usable form of nitrogen. |
| Photosynthesis | The process of sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide being converted into glucose which is stored, and oxygen, which is released as a waste product. 6CO2+6H2O→C6H12O6+6O2 |
| Cellular Respiration | The process of glucose, and oxygen getting converted into ATP energy for cells, water, and carbon dioxide as a waste product. C 6 H 12 O 6 + 6 O 2 --> 6 CO 2 + 6 H 2 O + ATP |
| Dentrification | When organisms break down nitrates in the soil, releasing nitrogen into the atmosphere. |
| Ammionfication | When nitrogen compounds are converted into ammonia. |
| Interconnected | To be joined together. |
| Water Cycle | The movement of water from the surface of Earth, to Earth's atmosphere, and back onto Earth in liquid, and gas form. |
| Carbon Cycle | The movement of carbon in the ecosystem going between living organisms, and the atmosphere. |
| Oxygen Cycle | The movement of oxygen throughout the ecosystem that goes between the biotic and abiotic factors. |
| Nitrogen Cycle | The movement of nitrogen through plants, animals, bacteria, the air, and the soil in the ground. |
