Blood groups

ABO system and the Rhesus system

TermDefinition
ABO system Based on antigens Antigen A and antigen B on red blood cells, gives rise to 4 blood groups.
Antigens Substance that produce an immune response
Blood group A Have antigen A on their red blood cells.
What blood groups can A accept blood from? Group A and group O.
Group B Have antigen B on their red blood cells
What blood groups can B accept blood from? Group B and Group O
Group AB Have both antigen A & B on their red blood cells
What blood groups can AB accept blood from? Can accept blood from anyone (universal recipient)
Group O Have no antigens Universal donor as they have no antigens
What blood groups can O accept blood from? Group O
Rhesus factor Where was the rhesus antigen first recognised? In rhesus monkeys
Types of rhesus antigens Rhesus positive Rhesus negative
When is the rhesus factor important? In blood transfusions or pregnancy
Rhesus factor in pregnancy Rhesus negative mother and rhesus positive baby. - can lead to complications Medication to treat: anti-D
