ABO system and the Rhesus system

| ABO system | Based on antigens Antigen A and antigen B on red blood cells, gives rise to 4 blood groups. |
| Antigens | Substance that produce an immune response |
| Blood group A | Have antigen A on their red blood cells. |
| What blood groups can A accept blood from? | Group A and group O. |
| Group B | Have antigen B on their red blood cells |
| What blood groups can B accept blood from? | Group B and Group O |
| Group AB | Have both antigen A & B on their red blood cells |
| What blood groups can AB accept blood from? | Can accept blood from anyone (universal recipient) |
| Group O | Have no antigens Universal donor as they have no antigens |
| What blood groups can O accept blood from? | Group O |
| Rhesus factor Where was the rhesus antigen first recognised? | In rhesus monkeys |
| Types of rhesus antigens | Rhesus positive Rhesus negative |
| When is the rhesus factor important? | In blood transfusions or pregnancy |
