Trophic Biomes
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| trophic level | Each step in a food chain or food web |
| Ecosystem | A biological community of interacting organisms and their physical environment. |
| energy pyramid | Shows the amount of energy that moves from one feeding level to another in a food web |
| Producer | An organism that can produce its own food. |
| Consumer | An organism that consumes energy by feeding on other organisms |
| Autotroph | An organism that makes its own food (Auto |
| Heterotroph | An organism that cannot make its own food. (Hetero |
| primary consumer | An organism that eats producers |
| secondary consumer | An organism that eats primary consumers |
| tertiary consumer | An animal that feeds on secondary consumers in a food chain. |
| Decomposer | An organism that breaks down wastes and dead organisms |
| Law of Conservation of Energy | energy cannot be created or destroyed, it can only change forms |
| Biomass | A measure of the total dry mass of organisms within a particular region |
| apex predator | the top predator in an ecosystem |
| Quaternary Consumer | An organism that eats tertiary consumers |
| 10% rule | Only 10% of the total energy produced at each trophic level is available to the next level. The amount of energy passed up to the levels of the food pyramid reduces as you go up. |
| Most energy is lost as _______________ | heat |
| Food Chain | A series of events in which one organism eats another and obtains energy. |
| Food Web | A community of organisms where there are several interrelated food chains |
| Predator | An animal that hunts other animals for food |
| Prey | An organism that is killed and eaten by another organism |
| biotic factors | All the living organisms that inhabit an environment |
| abiotic factors | Abiotic factors are the non |
| temperate forest | Distinct seasons and moderate climate |
| Taiga Forest | Characterized by coniferous forests; has a subarctic continental climate with very large temperature range between seasons, but the long and cold winter is the dominant feature. |
| tundra biome | very short cold summers and very long and extremely cold winters with strong winds and very little precipitation. contains permafrost |
| tropical forest | A terrestrial biome characterized by high levels of precipitation and warm temperatures year |
| Desert Biome | a biome that has little or no plant life, long periods without rain, and extreme temperatures; usually found in hot climates |
| savannah biome | a biome that often has scattered trees and that is found in tropical and subtropical areas where seasonal rains, fires, and drought happen |
| marine biome | covers 70% of earth's surface; largest biome; temperatures vary from region to region; algae and plankton form the base of the food chain |
| freshwater biome | Aquatic biomes that include lakes, streams, rivers and ponds. Salt concentration of less than 1%. |
