Carbon Cycle

8th Grade Unit 18

TermDefinition
Rock Cycle a continuous process where rocks change from one type to another (like igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic) over time, through processes like melting, cooling, weathering, erosion, and compaction, driven by the Earth's internal heat and pressure
Anthropogenic Carbon carbon dioxide (CO2) released into the atmosphere as a direct result of human activities
Dissolved Minerals minerals that have been broken down and dissolved into a liquid, usually water
Erosion a natural process that breaks down and moves soil, rocks, and other materials on the Earth's surface
Carbonic Acid a very weak acid that forms when carbon dioxide (CO2) dissolves in water
Carbon Cycle the continuous movement of carbon atoms between the Earth's atmosphere, oceans, living organisms, and soil
Abiotic Factors non-living parts of an ecosystem that affect the organisms that live there
Fossil Fuels non-renewable energy sources that come from the remains of ancient organisms
Combustion a chemical reaction that occurs when a substance reacts with oxygen, releasing energy in the form of heat and light.
Fuel a substance that can be burned to create heat, electricity, or other forms of energy
Respiration the process of breathing in oxygen and breathing out carbon dioxide
Seafloor Carbon carbon dioxide that is stored on the ocean floor, primarily in the form of dead organic matter from marine life that has sunk and accumulated over time
Weathering the process by which rocks and minerals break down over time due to natural forces
Short Term Reserves a storage for carbon where carbon is always moving through it like plants or the atmosphere
Long Term Reserves a storage for carbon where carbon is held over time until an outside source causes it to enter the carbon cycle
Carbon chemical element, represented by the symbol "C", that is a fundamental building block of life on Earth
Reservoirs a place on Earth where large amounts of carbon are stored
Photosynthesis the process by which plants use sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide to create sugar (energy) for themselves, releasing oxygen as a byproduct
Decomposition the process by which dead organic substances are broken down into simpler organic or inorganic matter

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
