Classifying Plants

Chapter 3 Lesson 2

TermDefinition
Non vascular plants Plants that have no true vascular tissue
Rhizoid Thin rootlike structure that anchor moss to the ground and absorb water and nutrients
Vascular plants Plants that have true vascular tissue
Phloem The vascular tissue through which food moves
Xylem The vascular tissue through which water and minerals move
Frond The leaf of a fern
Pollen Tiny structures that contain the cells that will later become sperm cells
Seed A structure that contains a young plant inside a protective covering
Gymnosperm A seed plant that produces “naked” seeds
Angiosperm A flowering plant that produces seeds enclosed in a protective fruit
Cotyledon A leaf produced by the embryo of a seed plant that sometimes stores food
Monocot An angiosperm that has only one seed leaf
Dicot An angiosperm that produce seeds with two seed leaves
