| Pretreatment | Any special attention you give a garment before laundering |
| Stains | A spot or discoloration on a garment |
| Prewash Stain Remover | Products that help remove oily stains and heavy soil from fabrics. A laundry product specially formulated to help remove stains before washing. |
| Enzyme Presoak | A pre-washing stain removal treatment used to break down protein stains like grass, blood, and baby formula so they can be more efficiently removed during the regular wash cycle. |
| Detergents | Job is to remove dirt from fabrics. |
| High Efficiency Detergent | HE detergent, which is low sudsing and quick dispersing, is especially designed to work in front-load machines and top-load machines that can run low-water wash cycles. |
| Light Duty Detergent | Detergents designed for lightly soiled items and delicate fabrics. |
| Fragrance Free | Products that do not contain synthetic or natural fragrance materials. |
| Unscented Products | products that do not have a noticeable scent, yet they may contain fragrance chemicals that mask or neutralize the odors of other ingredients. |
| Dye free | Laundry soap free and without the dyes that are added to laundry detergents for allergies and sensitive skin. Dyes are added to make detergent look more commercially-appealing, to warn you when there's detergent residue on your clothing, |
| Bleach | Product used with detergents to remove stains, whiten, and brighten 100% cotton fabrics. |
| Non Chlorine Bleach | A less potent alternative to chlorine bleach, or common household bleach. Non-chlorine bleach generally uses hydrogen peroxide as an active ingredient, which kills germs. |
| Chlorine bleach | Any chlorine-containing bleach that has sodium hypochlorite as the active agent used as either a whitening and disinfecting agent in laundry or an all-purpose disinfectant with broad applications. |
| Bleeding colors | A color that releases some of its dye onto other fabrics (causes fading of garments). |
| Colorfast | Having colors that will not bleed or fade. |
| Fabric softner | Can be liquid and used in the washing machine or dry sheets used in the dryer. Reduce static, make fabrics softer, and reduce wrinkling. |
| Water softener | A device or substance that softens hard water by removing certain minerals. |
| Pressing | The process of lifting and lowering the iron onto areas of the fabric. |
| Ironic | Moving the iron back and forth over the fabric. |
| Soleplate | The bottom of your iron (the flat, hot part). |
| Dry Clean | To clean using chemicals rather than with water and detergent. |
| Sorting | Grouping clothes into piles according to how you will launder them. |
| Tumble drying | Drying clothes in an automatic dryer. |
| Line drying | Hanging up washed clothes (usually on a clothesline) to dry |
| Flat drying | Drying a washed garment by first rolling the garment in a towel and pressing the water out, then laying the garment out flat on a clean, dry surface. |
| Mildew | A fungus that grows on damp fabrics, causing stains. |
| Snag | A loop or yarn pulled out of a fabric. |
| Alteration | A change made in a garment so that it will fit properly. |

| Care label | A label attached to a garment or fabric giving the manufacturer's instructions for its care and cleaning. |
| Permanent care rule | Rules enforced by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), which requires manufacturers and importers to attach care instructions to garments. |
| Textile Fibers Products Identification Act | An act that deals with mandatory content disclosure in the labeling, invoicing, and advertising of textile fiber products. Under the Act, misbranding is unlawful under the FTC Act. |
| Fiber content | The make up of the yarn content of any given fabric (such as 60% cotton and 40% rayon). By regulation of the Federal Trade Commission, this information must be provided in all price lists. |
| Country of Origin | Means the country of manufacture, production, or growth of any article of foreign origin entering the United States. |
