cell membrane a lipid barrier that encloses the cytoplasm and controls what enters and exits the cell
cell wall a tough, protective barrier that surrounds the outer membrane of some types of cells
nucleus a membrane-bound structure in eukaryotic cells that contains the DNA
DNA the molecule that carries genetic information for the development and functioning of an organism.
mitochondria the organelle in the cytoplasm of eukaryotic cells that functions in energy production; the power factory of the cell
chloroplast a membrane-bound organelle in plants that is the site of photosynthesis
vacuole a membrane-bound cell organelle that holds water. Larger in a plant cell.

cytoplasm the gelatinous liquid that fills the inside of a cell.
organ a collection of of similar tissues joined together into a structure that performs a specialized function
organism a self-contained living thing
specialized having characteristics that allow specific functions to be performed
subsystem a self-contained system within a larger system
system a group of interacting or interdependent elements forming a complex whole, as in all the factors or variables in an environment or all the variables that might affect a science experiment
tissue a mass of similar cells that perform a specialized function
