Notes for ecology test

QuestionAnswer
Ecosystem definition A group of living organisms that live in an environment that is self regulating
What is the earth subdivided into (3) Atmosphere, lithosphere,Hydrosphere
Define atmosphere Layer of gases surrounding the earth
Define lithosphere Earths crust/ solid portion off the earth( includes the land under the sea)
Define hydrosphere All the water in earth (includes liquid, vapour and ice)
3 simple terms for atmosphere,lithosphere,hydrosphere Air,earth,water
Different layers of the atmosphere 4( what are they) Troposphere, stratosphere, mesosphere, thermosphere
Facts about troposphere (1) From 0-10km, temperature ranges from 15 to -60 Celsius, only layer of the atmosphere with mix of gases and temperature to support life
Facts about stratosphere (2) From 10-50km, temperature ranged from -60 to 0 Celsius, only clumps of living class are found, most of the ozone layer
Facts about mesosphere (3) From 50-80 km, temperature ranges from 0 to -1000 Celsius
Facts about thermosphere (4) From 80-300km, temperature ranges from -100 to 1500 Celsius, named for the high temperatures near the edge of the layer closer to the sun
Lithosphere information Sits on top of the fluid layers called mantle, extends inward from earths surface, as thin as 5km as thick as 100km, warmed by the heat if the sun and heat of earths core
Hydrosphere information About 97% salt water in the oceans, the other 3% fresh water but mostly frozen in snow or glaciers, Total amount of water on earth remains CONSTANT, warmed by the sun and earths fore
Climate means… The average weather conditions of a region over a long time ( 30 years atleast) ( long),average conditions
Weather means… The temperature that occurs at a particular time or place doesn’t have to be consistent( short), day to day conditions
Adaptation means When something changes so it has the best chance to live ( more suited for the environment)
Climate change means… Noticeable change in the average temperature of a region over time
Types of evidence for climate change ( anecdotal evidence ) Evidence based on a persons story( more biased), qualitative in nature. ( personal opinion)
Types of evidence of climate change ( instrumental evidence) Evidence based on measurement, may require special equipment, quantitative in nature ( proof/ facts)
Direct evidence Involves a direct measurement ( indicates global warming is occuring), historical evidence
Indirect evidence Does not involve measurement but has the idea of climate change
Types of indirect evidence Tree ring, ice core sampling, fossil record of insects, pollen sampling from bottom of lakes
What is tree ring analysis Shows the type of changing seasons, cold and drought, warmth and precipitation during a life of a tree
What is core sampling The lines in the wood how spaced out they are
What is Fossil records and pollen samples When examining fossils and pollen samples back than we can determine what lived at that point in earths history
Scientist are more confident in which type of data Quantitative date ( concrete data )

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
