What are some effects of family dynamics on an individual? - Family interactions define relational patterns of person - 1st time growing self image and identity, linking to role given in family & message communicated by parents - Strong supportive family will help a person function at the highest level possible
What are couples development? Get clients to talk & troubleshoot, Make env. to help couple understand goals & create trust, Intervention=stop conflict & better empathy, respect & intimacy, Therapeutic Intervention=Treat SO as partner, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy=Change warped logic
What is the impact of physical & mental illness on family dynamics? - Physical illness easier than mental - Fam may feel confused & embarrassed - Can be judgmental - Blame person w/ mental illness - Impact responsibility structure of fam & financially - SW educate fam (Fam counseling & support group)

What is the psychological defense mechanism: repression? - When a person suppresses thoughts and memories that are too difficult to process/handle - May experience memory loss or psychogenic amnesia related to those memories
What is the psychological defense mechanism- Displacement? When someone displaces feelings they have towards someone on another person
What is the psychological defense mechanism- Sublimation? - When the socially unacceptable thought is transformed into a healthy, acceptable creative direction - Ex: Turning pain into poetry
What is the psychological defense mechanism- Rationalization? - Unacceptable thoughts & feelings are logically explained, and defended
What is the psychological defense mechanism- Reaction Formation? - When negative feelings are covered up by a false or exaggerated version of it's opposite - Ex: Person may display strong feelings of affection to someone, though internally & unconsciouslly hate that person
What is the psychological defense mechanism- Denial? Refusing to accept painful facts or situations and instead acting as if they weren't true or didn't happen
What is the psychological defense mechanism- Projection? Putting ones feelings onto another person and acting as if they are the one whose feeling it

What is the addiction Theory Moral Model? - Person abuses substances because they are weak - Addict is viewed as a sinner or criminal and doesn't have the courage to change the behavior, choosing to wallow in the misery of their sins
What is the addiction Disease/medical model? - Addict suffers from illness that will never be cured and is progressive in the development - When one relapses, addict picks up where disease would have taken them if drinking would continue - Ex: AA meetings
What is the addiction Bio-Psychosocial Model? -Culture and social factors influences belief and attitude about alcohol abuse -Observation of other pattern of ingesting alcohol influences appeal as form of relive or celebration -Exposure to people who use big # of alcohol may normalize unfit pattern
What is the addiction Learning Theory? - Uses positive reinforcement - Interplay of operant, and classical conditioning & social learning to contribute to initiation, maintenance, and relapse - Intoxicant = Immediate reinforcement in form of increased euphoria or relaxation
What is the addiction Genetic Theory? - Children of parents who struggle w/ addiction are more prone to addiction then children of non-alcoholics - Genetic predisposition towards addiction counts for half of ones susceptibility to becoming an addict

What is social change and community development theory- Community Level Change? - Demonstrates power in solidarity - Acknowledges reality that many problems are at social level rather than individual level - Implication: Therapy address only symptoms of problems and not underlying causes
What are the dynamics in interpersonal relationships? - Strong interpersonal actions built over time with honest communication, support, and shared history - Healthy: Mutual respect, care & consideration between members - Dysfunctional: Extreme power imbalance, dominance of one person, learned helplesness
What is the model of family life education in social work? - Families sometimes need to be educated concerning their biopsychosocial structure and other kinds of family structures - Family life has become very diverse and SW's need to be educated on these models so they can further educate clients
What is Strength- Based and Resilience Theories? - Encourages SW's to focus on clients strengths, or assets and to build upon the clients inherent resiliency and positive characteristics - Could help remove some stigma attached to groups or conditions
