Organ Systems View

Views different organ systems in the body.

QuestionAnswer
Integumentary System Functions: Protects deeper tissue from injury; Forms external body covering Location of CUTANEOUS (surface of skin) nerve receptors Skin; largest body system; huge amt of receptors, raises area of receptors; synthesizes Vit D (cholesterol->Vit D)
Skeletal System Functions: Protects and supports body organs; Provides muscle attachment for movement; Stores minerals Site of blood cell formation
Muscular System Functions: Allows locomotion; Maintains posture; Produces heat (eg shivers) Smooth muscles in the body help move waste (feces)
Nervous System Instantaneous; Electrical signal Functions: Fast acting CONTROL SYSTEM; Responds to internal and external change; Activates muscles and glands
Endocrine System Functions: Secretes regulatory hormones (growth, reproduction, metabolism) Much slower control system than nervous system b/c of HORMONES (chemical messenger in the blood)
Cardiovascular System Functions: Transports materials in the body via blood pumped by the heart (oxygen, carbon dioxide, nutrients, wastes, hormones); Protects body from bacteria, toxins, and tumor cells Carry to and from tissue cells where exchanges are made
Lymphatic System Functions: Returns fluids to blood vessels; disposes of debris; cleanse blood and house cells involved in immunity; keeps blood continuously flowing through the body Complements Cardiovascular System
Respiratory System Functions: Keeps blood supplied with oxygen; removes carbon dioxide Gases transported to and from blood through the thin walls of the tiny air sacs in lungs
Digestive System Functions Only Functions: Breaks down food; Delivers those products to blood for dispersal to body cells; Allows for nutrient absorption into blood; Eliminates indigestible material; Reclaim water
Digestive System (cont) Breakdown activities begun in mouth completed in small intestine Tube running from mouth to anus
Urinary System Functions: Eliminates nitrogenous wastes; Maintains acid-base balance of the blood; Regulates water and electrolytes (salt) Called excretory system
Reproductive System Involved in the production of offspring
