Cell Structures - Q1

7th Grade Q1S2 - What are the structures and functions of the cell?

QuestionAnswer
Organelles Specialized structures that perform various functions in the cell.
plant cell Cells that contain a cell wall.
animal cell Cells that do NOT have a cell wall.
cell wall Provides protection and maintains the structure of the cell; gives the cell a box-like shape.
cell membrane Controls what enters and leaves the cell; holds the cell together.
nucleus Organelle that contains genetic information and controls cell activity.
Cytoplasm Gel-like substance that supports other organelles.
Chloroplasts Site of photosynthesis; converts sunlight into food for plant cells.
mitochondria Provides energy for the cell and is the site of cellular respiration.
vacuole Organelle that stores nutrients and waste.
homeostasis Process of maintaining internal stability of a cell.
Photosynthesis A process where plants convert energy from the sun into food and carbon dioxide into oxygen
cellular respiration The process of obtaining energy from the breaking of chemical bonds in nutrients.
