| 1. Bubble diagram: | A type of concept map that uses ovals and circles to represent rooms and their relationships within the diagram of a building footprint. |
| 2. Block diagram: | A diagram that refines the shapes of the bubbles into rooms and more clearly align the shapes and their locations within the building structure. |
| 3. Circulation pattern: | The routes people follow as they move from one place to another within a space. |
| 4. Traffic pattern: | The patterns in which users move within a space. |
| 5. Private zone: | Spaces allocated to private living. |
| 6. Public/Social zone: | Public areas that include the entry, living room, great room, dining room, and guest bathroom. |
| 7. Work zone: | Highly functional areas where any type of work occurs. |
| 8. Open floor plan: | Multiple rooms combined into one big room that is separated by furniture arrangements. Applies only to common areas. |
| 9. Closed floor plan: | Each room is separated by walls and hallways. |
| 10. Semi-open floor plan: | A hybrid mix of open and closed floor plans, a plan with two rooms that are open to each other instead of three, designs may include partial walls, cased doorways, or l-shaped rooms. |
| 11. Chroma therapy: | A type of light therapy that uses colored light to create soothing effects. |
| 12. Primary bathroom: | A full bathroom that is only accessible through the master bedroom. |
| 13. En-suite bathroom: | A bathroom that is directly connected to a bedroom. |
| 14. Jack and Jill bathroom: | A full bathroom with two or more entrances, usually from two bedrooms on either side of the bathroom. |
| 15. Conversation grouping: | An arrangement of furniture that fosters communication among users. |
| 16. Flex room: | A room within a home that can change usage to meet or suit any need. |
| 17. Work triangle: | The historic three major work areas: sink, cooktop/oven, and refrigerator. |
| 18. Island: | A free standing piece of cabinetry that is placed in a kitchen to supplement countertop space. |
| 19. Peninsula: | A cabinet or series of cabinets that are only connected to the main body of the kitchen on one side. |
| 20. Mudroom: | A small room or entryway where footwear, outerwear and misc. items can be removed/stored before entering a house. |
