Ecology Terms grade 9 science definition

Natural ecosystem not planed or maintained by people.
Artificial ecosystem artificial ecosystem, is planned and maintained by people. Examples are cities,zoos, Aquarium,
species similar organisims in an ecosystem that can reproduce with each other
population a group of members of the same species that live in the same area.
community population of a different species that live and interact in the same area.they compete for resources within the area.
Niche similar organisims in an ecosystem that can reproduce with each other.
Biome large geographical region that contains similar ecosystems.
terrestrial - land based / aquatic -water based
biosphere a part of our planet ,including water,land,air,where life exixits. Biomes combine to form this.
herbiovers any animal that only eats plants.
carnivores a animal that eats mostly meat.
omivores an animal that eats both meat and plants .
preditors an animal that eats off of live animals.
scavengers an animal that eats dead animals.
parasites obtain there food by feeding off of another organizim.
detritivores A consumer that feeds on organic matter.
decomposers a special group of consumers that break down organic matter and release the nutrients back into the ecosystem.
autotroph Oranisims that make their own food from basic nutrients and sunlight.
heterotroph Organisms that must feed on other Organisms to obtain energy
food chains show a step by step sequence of who eats whom in the ecosystem.
photosynthesis the process plants use to produce.
biodiversity number and range of different organisms in a area.
extirpated Animals that no longer exisit in particular area.
Amphibious born in water,breathing with gills but can live on land and in water.
carrying capacity minimum number of individuals that an ecosystem can support.
