| Term | Definition |

| Biosphere | the regions of the surface, atmosphere, and hydrosphere of the earth (or analogous parts of other planets) occupied by living organisms. |
| Lithosphere | the rigid outer part of the earth, consisting of the crust and upper mantle |
| Atmosphere | the envelope of gases surrounding the earth or another planet. |
| Hydrosphere | the total amount of water on there planet |
| Abiotic | physical rather than biological; not derived from living organisms. |
| Biotic | relating to or resulting from living things, especially in their ecological relations. |
| Organism | an individual animal, plant, or single-celled life form. |
| Ecology | the study of the relationships between living organisms |
| Limiting factor(s) | anything that constrains a population's size and slows or stops it from growing. |
| Population | all the inhabitants of a particular town, area, or country. |
| Community | a group of people living in the same place or having a particular characteristic in common. |
| Ecosystem | a biological community of interacting organisms and their physical environment. |
| Ecological Succession | the process by which the mix of species and habitat in an area changes over time. |
| Primary succession | when a new area of land is populated by a group of species for the first time. |
| Secondary succession | when a climax community or intermediate community is impacted by a disturbance. |
| Biome | an area classified according to the species that live in that location. |
| Pioneer species | the species that first colonize new habitats created by disturbance. |
| Predator | an animal that naturally preys on others. |
| Prey | an animal that is caught and killed by another for food |
