Cnidarians have... Stinging cells, 2 stages in their life cycle, radial symmetry, tissues and organs, diploblastic, mouth and digestive cavity
What are the four classes with the Phylum Cnidaria? Hydrozoa, Scyphosoa, Anthazoa, Cubozoa
What are some features of Cnidarian Anatomy? Simple nervous net, cnidocytes/nematocysts (stinging ports)
Two stages of Cnidarian life. Polyp (sessile w/upright tentacles, asexual stage, corals, hydras, sea anemones) and Medusae (free-swimming, bell-shaped w/tentacles hanging down, sexual stage)
Groups of jellies are called... Swarms, blooms or smacks.
Class Anthazoa Sea Fans (gorgorians), Coral/Reefs, Deep Water Corals
Sea Fans (Gorgorians) characteristics Colonies of polyps, anchor in substrate, flow with current
Coral/Reefs characteristics Colonial polyps, calcium carbonate skeletons create reefs, symbiotic relationship with zooxanthella
Deep Water Corals characteristics Stony corals, black coral, wire/whip corals, no zooxanthaelle
Class Hydrozoa Physalia (Portuguese Man of War), mixed colony of medusae and polyps, gas filled float upwards of 30cm, tentacles up to 20m.
Class Cubozoa (Box Jellies and Sea Wasps) Small, very bad/painful stings, tropical areas=more blooms
Class Scyphozoa "True jellyfish."
Cnidarians have this digestive cavity Blind sac gut
Do cnidarians partake in active predation? No, they are passive predators.
Phylum Ctenophora NOT Cnidarians! They have 8 rows/combs of cilia, colloblasts=adhesive structures, hydrostatic skeleton and blind sac gut
Which class of Cnidarians only has a polyp life cycle stage? Anthazoa
Which class is considered "true jellyfish"? Scyphozoa
Give examples of Cnidarians in class Anthazoa Sea Anemones and Corals
Give examples of Cnidarians in class Hydrozoa Hydra, Portuguese Man-Of-War, Stinging Limu, Fire Coral
Give examples of Cnidarians in class Cubozoa Box Jellies and Sea Wasps
Give examples of Cnidarians in class Scyphozoa Lionsmane Jellyfish, Bay Nettle, Sea Nettle
What is the difference between Bay and Sea Nettles? Bay Nettle - Smaller Bell, Longer Oral Arms, Less Tentacles Sea Nettle - Larger Bell, Shorter Oral Arms, More Tentacles
