Imaging of Patients with Special Needs

TermDefinition
Exposure sequence does play a role in preventing gag reflex endodontic patient patient who has undergene root canal treatment or disease of dental pulp with in tooth
psychogenic stimuli stimuli originating mind
tactile stimuli stimuli originating from touch
areas of oral cavity most likely to elicit the gag reflex is posterior or lateral 3rd of tongue and soft palate
most common examination often used in endentulous patients is panoramic
What size receptor is used for endentulous examinations size 2
MD central incisors, MX and MD first molars erupt at what age 6-7
MX central incisors, MD lateral incisors erupt at what age 7-8
MX lateral incisors erupt at what age 8-9
MD canines erupt at what age 9-10
MX canines, MX and MD premolars erupt at what age 10-12
MX and MD 2nd molars erupt at what age 11-13
Lack of operator confidence may act as a psychogenic stimulus and contribute to gag reflex
The longer a receptor stays in the mouth the more likely a patient is to gag
Anterior pariapical projections are always exposed first before posterior pariapical projections because of less gagging
Receptor dragged along palatal tissues may stimulate gag reflex
DA shouldn’t ask ask patient is they “are a gagger”
If patient gags, DA should remove receptor as quickly as possible and reassure patient
If patient is breathing during receptor placement and exposure the gag reflex will not occur
Distracting patient often helps suppress gag reflex
If dental radiographer determines that a person can’t tolerate intraoral projections, no intraoral projections/receptors should be exposed
It’s not appropriate for DA to ask personal questions about patients disabilities
With pediatric patients DA must alter patient management techniques
During endodontic procedure, receptor placement is difficult because of poor visualization of tooth
If panoramic x-ray unit isn’t available 14 pariapical projections can be used to examin endoentulous arches
