TermDefinition
Limiting Factors Things like food, water, and space that control the growth of a population
Carrying Capacity The largest population that fits into an area
Decomposer A living thing that breaks down dead things into dirt
Producer A plant that uses the sun’s energy to make food through photosynthesis
Primary Consumer A living thing that eats plants
Secondary Consumer A living thing that eats primary consumers
Tertiary Consumer A living thing at the top of the food chain that eats secondary consumers.
Ecological Succession The process of one community slowly changing into another, like a forest growing back after a fire
Climax community A community that no longer grows or changes
Pioneer Species The first species that grows or lives on new land
