Infection Control and the Dental Radiographer

| Disinfect | use of chemical/ physical procedure to destroy all pathogens except spores |
| Sterilize | use of chemical or physical procedure to destroy all pathogens including spores |
| Asepsis | absence of pathogens |
| Infectious waste | waste that consist of blood products contaminated sharp and other microbiological products |
| Pathogens | microorganisms capable of causing disease |
| Non-critical instruments | Instrument that doesn’t contact mucous membrane (mouth) |
| Semi-critical instruments | Instrument that contacts but doesn’t penetrate soft tissue/bone |
| Critical instruments | instruments that are used to penetrate soft/tissue |
| Parenteral exposure | exposure to infectious materials resulting from procedures performed by the dental professionals |
| Antisepsis | substance preventing growth of bacteria |
| PPE must be changed | daily or more if soiled |
| Gloves | worn by all dental professionals, changed after each patient, sterile for surgical procedures |
| Masks | must be changed between patient, when soiled eyewear must be disinfected between patient, mask and eyewear is optional |
| Hands must be washed | before and after gloving, before and after each patient, after touching contaminated surfaces (40-60) |
