| Immigration | When individuals move into a population |
| Emigration | When individuals move out of a population |
| Limiting Factors | Environmental factors that limit the growth of a population |
| Carrying Capacity | The largest population that an area can support |
| Producer | An organism that uses the sun’s energy to make food through photosynthesis |
| Primary Consumer | An organism that eats producers (plants) |
| Secondary Consumer | An organism that eats primary consumers |
| Tertiary Consumer | An organism at the top level of the food chain that eats secondary consumers |
| Vernal Pool | Temporary wetlands that provide unique habitats for many amphibians and invertebrate animals |
| Ecological Succession | The process of one ecological community gradually changing into another |
| Primary succession | When an area of bare rock is populated by a group of species for the first time |
| Secondary succession | When an area of land is re-populated by a group of species after a disturbance |
| Climax Community | A stable community that no longer goes through ecological changes |
| Pioneer Species | The first species that colonizes new or undisturbed land |
