Immigration When individuals move into a population
Emigration When individuals move out of a population
Limiting Factors Environmental factors that limit the growth of a population
Carrying Capacity The largest population that an area can support
Producer An organism that uses the sun’s energy to make food through photosynthesis
Primary Consumer An organism that eats producers (plants)
Secondary Consumer An organism that eats primary consumers
Tertiary Consumer An organism at the top level of the food chain that eats secondary consumers
Vernal Pool Temporary wetlands that provide unique habitats for many amphibians and invertebrate animals
Ecological Succession The process of one ecological community gradually changing into another
Primary succession When an area of bare rock is populated by a group of species for the first time
Secondary succession When an area of land is re-populated by a group of species after a disturbance
Climax Community A stable community that no longer goes through ecological changes
Pioneer Species The first species that colonizes new or undisturbed land
