Physiology weeks 1-6
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Macromolecules are | large molecules composed of thousands of covalently connected atoms (carbohydrates , lipids, proteins, nucelic acids) |
| Enzymes | macromolecules that speed up the dehydration process , speed up reactions |
| carbohydrates | sugars , polymers of sugars |
| saturated fatty acids | have the maximum number of hydrogen atoms possible and no double bonds |
| Phospholipid bilayer | plasma membrane layers composed of phospholipid molecules arranged with polar heads facing outside and nonpolar tails facing the inside |
| Protein functions: | structural support storage transport cellular communication movement defense |
| Structural proteins | support (keratin , collagen , elastin ) |
| Amino acids | organic compounds with carboxyl and amino groups, with a differing "R group" |
| Peptide bond | covalent bond that connects amino acids |
| Primary structure | sequence of amino acids, determined by inherited genetic information |
| Secondary structure | either an alpha helix or beta pleated sheet |
| Tertiary structure | determined by interactions between R groups -disulfide bridges may reinforce protein structure |
