Circulatory & Respiratory System

QuestionAnswer
Blood The primary liquid of the body that transports oxygen and nutrients and removes waste.
Circulatory System The body system that transports oxygen, nutrients, and waste through the body in the blood.
Plasma The liquid part of the blood that is mostly water. It also contains dissolved nutrients and waste products, such as carbon dioxide.
Red Blood Cells The solid part of the blood that absorbs oxygen from the air in the lungs and transports it to every cell in the body.
White Blood Cells The solid part of the blood that helps the body fight infections. They attack and destroy viruses and bacteria that enter the body.
Platelets The tiny sticky pieces of blood cells that help prevent bleeding and make the blood clot when a blood vessel is cut. It also helps repair damage to blood vessels.
Heart The organ in the circulatory system made up of muscle tissue that pumps the blood through the blood vessels.
Capillaries The smallest blood vessels that diffuse oxygen and nutrients to the cells and remove waste from the cells.
Veins The blood vessels that return blood to the heart.
Heart Rate The number of times a heart beats per minute.
Pulse The rhythmical throbbing produced by regular contractions and expansions of the arteries, especially as palpated at the wrist or the neck.
Respiratory System The system in which oxygen diffuses into the blood and carbon dioxide diffuses out of the blood.
Lungs Two spongy, sac like respiratory organs that function to remove carbon dioxide from the blood and provide the blood with oxygen.
Oxygen An element that we breathe that is used by the body to produce energy.
Carbon Dioxide A waste product formed during respiration (breathing) that releases energy in cells, and a gas that we exhale.
