Geologic Time Scale a tool scientists use to describe the timing of events that have occurred during Earth’s history, purpose is to break down geological time into small manageable pieces that scientists can examine
Era the largest interval of a geologic time scale
Extinction the disappearance of a species from all parts of its geographical range
Mass Extinction even in which many types of living things become extinct at the same time
Relative Dating a method of determining the age of a fossil by comparing its placement with that of fossils in other layers of rock
Radioactive Dating technique in which scientists calculate the age of a sample based upon the amount of remaining radioactive isotopes it contains, also called absolute dating
Half-Life the amount of time it takes for half of the radioactive elements in a rock to decay to form a stable element, example is carbon-14 decaying into nitrogen
