Adaption an inherited characteristic that increases an organism’s chance of survival
Variation a change in a characteristic from individual to individual or from population to population, can either enhance or deter from the survival of that individual or population; the raw material that the concept of natural selection operates on
Natural Selection process by which individuals that are better suited to their environment survive and reproduce most successfully; also called survival of the fittest
Fossil the preserved remains or evidence of an ancient organism
Fossil Record information about past life, including the structure of organisms, what they ate, what ate them, in what environment they lived, and the order in which they lived
Biogeography the study of the distribution of plants and animals throughout the world
Comparative Anatomy the study of organisms with anatomical similarities and thought to be closely related to each other
Homologous Structures structures that have different mature forms in different organisms, but develop from the same embryonic tissues, ex: bird wing, human arm, whale fin
Embryological Development development of a body plan controlled by the same genes, ex: all vertebrates have a notochord down the back in early development
Vestigial Strucures parts of an organism that do not currently serve any important function, but may have earlier in life, ex: the tailbone within humans
Uniformitarianism the principle on which geology was founded; processes operating today on the earth operated in much the same way in the geologic past
