Lesson 22- Evolutionary Thought
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Adaption | an inherited characteristic that increases an organism’s chance of survival |
| Variation | a change in a characteristic from individual to individual or from population to population, can either enhance or deter from the survival of that individual or population; the raw material that the concept of natural selection operates on |
| Natural Selection | process by which individuals that are better suited to their environment survive and reproduce most successfully; also called survival of the fittest |
| Fossil | the preserved remains or evidence of an ancient organism |
| Fossil Record | information about past life, including the structure of organisms, what they ate, what ate them, in what environment they lived, and the order in which they lived |
| Biogeography | the study of the distribution of plants and animals throughout the world |
| Comparative Anatomy | the study of organisms with anatomical similarities and thought to be closely related to each other |
| Homologous Structures | structures that have different mature forms in different organisms, but develop from the same embryonic tissues, ex: bird wing, human arm, whale fin |
| Embryological Development | development of a body plan controlled by the same genes, ex: all vertebrates have a notochord down the back in early development |
| Vestigial Strucures | parts of an organism that do not currently serve any important function, but may have earlier in life, ex: the tailbone within humans |
| Uniformitarianism | the principle on which geology was founded; processes operating today on the earth operated in much the same way in the geologic past |
