Photosynthesis Vocab

Vocabulary Practice for the process of photosynthesis

TermDefinition
Photosynthesis The process by which plants convert solar energy into chemical energy
Light dependent reactions The first stage of photosynthesis which involves the use of light energy to split water, generating oxygen gas, ATP, and NADPH
Inputs of the light dependent reaction Light, Water, ADP, and NADP+
Outputs of the light dependent reaction Oxygen, ATP, and NADPH
Word equation for photosynthesis carbon dioxide + water + light --> glucose + oxygen
Light independent reactions the second stage of photosynthesis which uses energy stored in ATP and NADPH to "fix" carbon dioxide into a more usable form and ultimately produces glucose
Inputs of the light independent reaction Carbon dioxide, ATP, and NADPH
Outputs of the light independent reaction Glucose, ADP, and NADP+
Chloroplast The organelle found in plants cells in which photosynthesis occurs
Chlorophyll The pigment found in the thylakoid disc of a chloroplast that captures light energy
Thylakoid disc The location of the light dependent reactions
Stroma The location of the light independent reactions
Energy conversion that occurs in photosynthesis solar energy to chemical energy
Inputs of photosynthesis carbon dioxide, water, and light
Outputs of photosynthesis glucose and oxygen
Autotrophs organisms that do photosynthesis- they capture solar energy and convert it to chemical energy in the form of glucose
Granum a stack of thylakoid discs
Leaves plant organ that contains chloroplasts in high concentrations for photosynthesis to occur
Stomata Pores, or openings on the leaves of plants to allow for the diffusion of gases--oxygen out and carbon dioxide in.
Calvin Cycle The other name for the light independent reactions.
ATP adenosine triphosphate-a high energy molecule
NADPH electron carrying molecule that transfer electrons from the light dependent reaction to the light independent reaction.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
